Lamwo Piggery Farmers Dream Big with DRDIP Support

Piggery farming is a form of animal husbandry that deals with the domestication of pigs. Piggery is one of the money-spinning businesses in Uganda as it brings quick returns both upcountry and in the urban settings.

It’s for this reason that a group of 15(10f, 05m) community members from Loi Bide South village, Mura Parish of Padibe Town Council in Lamwo district developed a project proposal that was funded by DRDIP through a World Bank grant in June 2021. Loibidde South One Piggery Farmers’ Group received funding to a tune of UGX18.5 million that was used for construction of shelter, purchase of 12(10 females and 02males) piglets and feeding support.

The group chairperson, John Osborn Anywar says their proposal went through vetting before it was approved. “Our dream as Loibidde South One Piggery Farmers is to become the lead supplier of piggery products in Lamwo district”, says Anywar. He adds that, “we as members also expect to be able to strengthen our living condition at home and to easily support our children in school through this project”.

Why the Group Chose Piggery

Pigs produce fast and are easy to keep and feed. “the weather condition in our community is one that favours the rearing of pigs”, says Alex Ojara, a group member. Ojara believes that the group will be minting money from the project after every four months when the 12 piglets have reproduced and or grown enough for slaughter and sale.

“From each pig, when sold we expect to get up to UGX 800,000, that means if the current 12 multiply properly we shall make a lot of money”, adds, Felda Alinga another group member.

Kenneth Olanya the DRDIP Community Facilitator for Lagwel watershed in Lamwo district says, there are five piggery farming sub projects in the watershed. Other sub projects include; tree planting, solar installations, and small scale irrigation. This watershed also engages communities on the village revolving fund, a sub component under the Livelihood Support Project of DRDIP.

  1. Very good progress by the group. Mr. Olanyo should now guide them to prepare intermediate and long term action and business plans to ensure business growth, sustainability and diversification. Otherwise, excellent step in the right direction.
