Briquettes, an Alternative to Firewood and Charcoal

Briquette making at Kakunyu House Hold Lorence Store. Briquettes are made of combustible biomass materials such as; paper and saw dust. DRDIP under the Sustainable Environment Management component empowers communities to reduce human pressure on the environment by adopting sustainable fuel options.  Briquettes ensures a clean cooking option, and it’s as well a source of earning from its sale.

The above briquette making machine was procured and supplied to the community by DRDIP implementing partner, KRC Uganda in Isingiro District.

Briquettes production unit gives shelter for the machine and offers storage space for the final products.


Briquetts solar(sun) drying unit. This is where newly produced briquettes are sent for continuous drying. The unit enables complete drainage of water and binds the materials into the final product(briquette) which are used in domestic stoves.  Kakunyu House Hold Lorence Store and Briquette Making Group intend to maximize production and sell briquettes to the community as a way of income generation, but also to help reduce on the rampant human interference with trees in Isingiro district.
